The Biden administration is facing criticism from a conservative watchdog group for its efforts to incorporate woke ideologies into artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The American Accountability Foundation (AAF) has raised concerns that top government officials are pushing for dangerous ideologies to be embedded in AI systems.
According to the AAF, the Biden administration is using the pretext of combatting algorithmic discrimination and harmful bias to push a woke agenda. AAF President Tom Jones explained that President Biden is relying on racially obsessed social academics and activists to advise him on technology policy, rather than scientists. Jones argues that this partnership between technology and the woke movement could have terrifying consequences.
The AAF highlighted four recent Democratic documents as evidence of the Biden administration’s plan to promote woke AI technology. One of these documents is the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights, which calls for data used in AI system development to be reviewed for bias based on historical and societal context. It also recommends proactive equity assessments as part of system design.
In February, President Biden issued an executive order that directed federal agencies to ensure that AI systems in the United States comply with a woke agenda. The order emphasized the importance of embedding equity into all aspects of federal decision-making and combating algorithmic discrimination.
The White House’s Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, led by Arati Prabhakar, released the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan in May. This plan calls for resources to fight harmful biases and acknowledges the potential for AI systems to recapitulate biases derived from unfiltered data.
The AAF is particularly concerned about the appointment of Miriam Vogel, president and CEO of EqualAI, to chair the National AI Advisory Committee. EqualAI, partnered with the World Economic Forum, aims to reduce unconscious bias in AI and promote responsible AI governance.
The debate over AI has become politically charged, with concerns about the potential for AI to be weaponized and used to manipulate elections. Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has warned about the dangers of training AI to be woke.
In response to these concerns, the Biden administration recently hosted a roundtable with critics in California to address the role of Silicon Valley in AI development. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has also introduced a bill to regulate AI, citing concerns about disinformation and bias.
The AAF’s investigation into woke AI is ongoing, with the organization promising to reveal shocking findings in the future.
