AI chatbot are becoming increasingly popular but it is important to be aware of suspicious developers who may be trying to scam you. OpenAI has launched an API for ChatGPT developers to launch their products which has resulted in many ChatGPT knockoff apps with similar features, graphical user interface and conversations. These knockoff apps don’t provide the same value or proper security measures as the original chatbot.
Alex Kleber, a security researcher discovered multiple clone versions of the same app made by the same developer. Thus, consumers can unknowingly buy two identical products each sold under a different name and with a slightly different interface. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is free, but to use its more advanced features people can pay a monthly fee of $20 for ChatGPT+ subscription.
It is important to know how to differentiate legitimate AI chatbot apps from unethical copycats. Some of the scams may have a green colour scheme, similar to OpenAI’s one and lack an obvious close button when it comes to paywalls. It also will boast impressive, five-star ratings, a tactic often used by fraudsters. Fraudulent apps don’t have any close button for the paywall, hide the “X” button when it comes to free trial pop-ups and request users to review the app instantly after downloading it.
In addition, some apps may have separate versions from the same developer, which is against Apple’s policy. It is important to watch out for such scam tactics and do your due diligence when looking for AI chatbot. Do research and look for features and feedback from real user experience to make sure you’re choosing a quality app.
