Visiting India, OpenAI CEO warns: Attempting to build AI like ChatGPT will result in failure

Date:

OpenAI‘s CEO, Sam Altman, has caused a stir on social media after stating that it would be totally hopeless for Indians to build something like the company’s ChatGPT AI model. The comments came during a visit to India as part of a whirlwind tour of Asia by Altman, who was asked to provide guidance on how to create something like OpenAI and ChatGPT in the region. Responding to the question, Altman said that while he believed it was impossible to compete with OpenAI on training foundation models, he encouraged Indian startups to try anyway. However, some social media users have criticised Altman for underestimating India and Indians, whilst others have defended his comments by pointing out the enormous difficulties involved in building such a tool.
