Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN has employed ChatGPT to help improve computer system alerts that clinicians rely on for decision-making. In a blind test, a panel comprising four physicians and one pharmacist evaluated suggestions generated by ChatGPT alongside those from clinical specialists and concluded that nine of the top 20 recommendations were provided by the AI. Postdoctoral research fellow, Siru Liu, explained that such automated alerts can often be dismissed by time-pressured clinicians, but that leveraging AI could speed up the process and improve overall decision-making. The results from ChatGPT’s test were encouraging and there is potential for the AI to become even more effective with further specialized training.
