OpenAI, a company developing revolutionary AI-powered chatbots, recently revealed impressive results when its AI bot was tested at Brigham Young University in the United States. In a paper published in the journal Issues in Accounting Education, researchers from 187 universities revealed that the students outperformed ChatGPT in accounting exams. In overall, BYU students scored an average of 77% (76.7%) while the AI-powered ChatGPT achieved a score of 47% (47.4%).
Despite these results, researchers noted that the AI tool still showed an impressive performance, particularly in areas such as accounting information systems (AIS) and auditing. Nevertheless, it struggled to answer short-answer questions and higher-order questions, in addition to making errors in simple mathematical operations and fabricating references.
The paper gathered 327 co-authors from 187 educational institutions in 14 countries, who looked at the results of the chatbot’s performance. They even concluded that this tool will be a “game changer” in learning and teaching methods.
