The Markov Process works by tracking a system’s current state and loosely predicting what state might come afterwards. This helps a system, such as a chatbot’s conversation or a set of traffic lights, to formulate its next steps.

This is in contrast to machine learning, where all data must be present in order to be classified, and the program is only capable of performing predetermined steps. The Markov Process also has applications in analyzing complex healthcare scenarios. In 2013, a study by researchers from Indiana University and Centerstone Research Institute found that the Process allowed an AI to substitute and even complement a doctor’s decisions.
