Uncovering the Magic of ChatGPT: How a 19th-Century Technique Powers AI Conversation

Date:

ChatGPT is a large language model that uses something known as the Markov Process to make decisions. Developed by Russian mathematician Andrey Andreyevich Markov in the 19th century, this process factors in constant change and is used in a variety of fields, including artificial intelligence (AI). The Markov Process works by tracking a system’s current state and loosely predicting what state might come afterwards. This helps a system, such as a chatbot’s conversation or a set of traffic lights, to formulate its next steps.

ChatGPT is a state-of-the-art AI chatbot that is powered by the Markov Process. Its use of real-time data enables it to provide creative output (stories, poems, and explainers) in the tone of the user. This is in contrast to machine learning, where all data must be present in order to be classified, and the program is only capable of performing predetermined steps. This capability has made the Markov Process invaluable in the AI age, allowing ChatGPT to learn, recalculate and change according to the user’s input.

The Markov Process also has applications in analyzing complex healthcare scenarios. In 2013, a study by researchers from Indiana University and Centerstone Research Institute found that the Process allowed an AI to substitute and even complement a doctor’s decisions.

ChatGPT is part of OpenAI and is focused on developing advanced AI systems that can work together and evolve rapidly. OpenAI is a non-profit AI research company co-founded by technology entrepreneur, investor and musician Elon Musk as well as Y Combinator president Sam Altman. During its early days, OpenAI was backed by a group of investors such as Altman, Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffmann, Vishal Sikka and Amazon Web Services. OpenAI’s mission is to advance the development of AI systems in a way that is ethical, beneficial to humanity and beneficial to the environment.
