The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a groundbreaking resolution to regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI) on a global scale. This resolution, adopted on Thursday, focuses on ensuring the promotion of safe and secure AI systems for sustainable development.
There has been a growing international effort to establish regulations for AI due to concerns over potential disruptions to democratic processes, increased fraud, and job displacement. Europe has been at the forefront of AI regulation, with EU lawmakers already making significant strides in this area. In contrast, the Biden administration in the US has faced hurdles in getting AI regulation measures approved by Congress.
The newly adopted resolution emphasizes the development of AI systems that are safe, secure, and trustworthy while also benefiting sustainable development goals. It highlights the importance of upholding human rights throughout the entire AI life cycle.
More than 120 Member States co-sponsored this resolution, recognizing the potential of AI to accelerate progress towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The resolution also calls for global cooperation to bridge the technological gap between developed and developing nations, aiming for inclusive access to close the digital divide and enhance digital literacy.
In a statement, the UN underlined that this resolution will serve as a model for addressing AI challenges across various sectors, including peace, security, and the responsible military application of AI autonomy. It seeks to complement existing UN initiatives and stresses the international community’s responsibility to govern AI while upholding human rights and freedoms.
