UK Gov Reveals AI Fairness Innovation Challenge Victors

The UK government has announced the winners of the AI Fairness Innovation Challenge, a competition aimed at addressing bias and discrimination in artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The challenge, managed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and delivered by Innovate UK, will provide funding to four organizations to develop new solutions in the fields of higher education, healthcare, finance, and recruitment.

Under the challenge, the Open University will focus on improving the fairness of AI systems in higher education. The Alan Turing Institute will create a fairness toolkit for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and developers to self-assess and monitor fairness in AI models used in the financial sector. King’s College London will design a solution to address bias and discrimination in healthcare, specifically targeting early warning systems for cardiac arrest in hospitals. Additionally, Coefficient Systems Ltd. will work on reducing bias in automated CV screening algorithms used in the recruitment sector.

The four winning projects will receive up to £130,000 each to develop their solutions. This funding will be instrumental in advancing the development of AI for public good and ensuring the safety and responsibility of AI systems in various sectors.

The winners were selected through a rigorous evaluation process carried out by expert assessors chosen by DSIT and Innovate UK. The evaluation considered criteria such as potential impact, innovation, and alignment with the proposed AI regulatory principles outlined in the UK’s White Paper on AI regulation.

The projects are set to start by 1 May and will be supported by DSIT, as well as regulators such as the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to ensure compliance with data protection and equality legislation.
