Mangaluru: AI Integration in Daily Life: Potential, Decision-Making, and Healthcare
The future holds potential for AI integration in daily life, shaping decision-making, healthcare, and job roles, with an emphasis on human-centric skills, said Mahadeva Prasanna SR, professor, dean (FW, R&D), IIT Dharwad. As AI becomes pervasive, ethical concerns around biases, data privacy, and job displacement are prioritised, he added.
During the international conference on ‘Intelligent Systems in Computing and Communications, ISCComm-2023’, organised by the Mangalore Institute of Technology and Engineering, Moodbidri, Prasanna delivered a keynote address on the journey of AI.
From its slow beginnings in the mid-20th century to the current revolution, Prasanna highlighted rapid technological advancements, increased computational power, and the availability of big data as catalysts for the growth of AI.
As AI integrates further into our daily lives, it has the potential to transform various sectors. Decision-making processes can be enhanced with the assistance of AI algorithms, improving efficiency and accuracy. In healthcare, AI applications can revolutionize diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.
However, as AI advances, concerns about ethics and social implications arise. Biases embedded in AI algorithms can perpetuate discriminatory outcomes, necessitating the development of fair and unbiased systems. Protection of data privacy is also a critical consideration, and it is essential to ensure robust safeguards are in place to prevent misuse or unauthorized access to personal information.
Another significant concern is the potential displacement of jobs due to automation. As tasks that were once performed exclusively by humans become automated, it is crucial to reskill and upskill the workforce to adapt to the changing job landscape. The focus should be on developing human-centric skills that cannot be easily replicated by AI, such as critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence.
Prasanna’s keynote address shed light on these important aspects of AI integration and prompted further discussions during the conference. With the rapid advancements in AI technology, it is essential for researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to collaboratively address the challenges and opportunities that AI presents.
The conference organized by the Mangalore Institute of Technology and Engineering brought together experts from various disciplines to exchange knowledge and explore potential applications of intelligent systems in computing and communications.
As society moves towards an AI-powered future, it is vital to balance technological progress with ethical considerations to ensure a fair, inclusive, and transparent society. By acknowledging the potential and addressing the concerns, AI integration can truly benefit humanity, transforming the way we live, work, and interact in the years to come.
