Study Shows ChatGPT Offers High Quality Medical Advice and Empathy Level Beyond Human Doctors

Date:

A recent study has revealed that a language model AI system developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT, can outperform human doctors in terms of the quality and empathy of their medical advice. ChatGPT was tested using data from Reddit’s AskDocs community, where experienced medical professionals answer queries from users. The responses of three real-life doctors were assessed and compared to those of ChatGPT. As a result of the comparison, the board of experts concluded that in 79% of cases, ChatGPT provided higher quality, more compassionate answers than the human physicians.

In January, ChatGPT’s capabilities were put to the test by asking it to take an MBA exam. ChatGPT surprised the testing panel by obtaining a B/B grade on the test. In February, the AI model surprised the industry even more by advancing past the first round of a coding interview for an engineering position usually held by new college graduates. Also that month, ChatGPT scored close to the passing grade of an USMLE (United State Medical Licensing Exam) and showed its potential, even if this does not mean that it can pass it.

In addition, the study was led by Dr. John Ayers of the University of California San Diego. Dr. Ayers specializes in creating digital interventions to advance public health, specifically in the areas of infectious diseases, climate change, homelessness and drug use. Dr. Christopher Longhurst at UC San Diego Health commented on the results, which showed that ChatGPT can successfully draft high-quality, personalized medical advice. He stated that this opens the door for AI assistants to help improve healthcare. With its findings, the study underscores the potential of AI-based tools to assist humans in the medical field.
