Sauk Prairie Healthcare, a provider based in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, has successfully recovered from a recent cyber attack with no data breach detected. The attack, which occurred on October 31, was the fourth cyber attack on a southern Wisconsin organization in recent weeks. Sauk Prairie Healthcare’s cyber security partner alerted them to the breach, revealing that an unknown assailant had gained access to their network during the reconnaissance phase. The healthcare provider took immediate action and implemented controls to minimize the risk to critical systems and data, effectively blocking the attacker from advancing further.
As a precautionary measure, Sauk Prairie Healthcare took down its electronic health records system and postponed some elective surgeries. However, its 36-bed hospital, primary care clinics, emergency department, and wellness center remained open throughout the recovery process. The health records system, including the MyHealth patient portal, was fully restored on Tuesday, allowing the rescheduling of postponed appointments.
The healthcare system chose to delay making the cyber attack public until Friday to ensure that their actions were not monitored by the attacker. Sauk Prairie Healthcare’s service area covers approximately 45,000 people, extending from Poynette to Lone Rock and from Plain to Black Earth.
This cyber attack is part of a rising trend of hacks and cybersecurity breaches targeting various organizations. Cybersecurity experts attribute the increase in intensity to technological advancements, as both the public and private sectors become more reliant on sophisticated technology. Additionally, both American Family Insurance, based in Madison, and Kwik Trip, based in La Crosse, temporarily halted some customer-facing programs and online services due to cybersecurity incidents or unusual activity.
