OpenAI, the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup under CEO Sam Altman, is being held back by a major shortage of specialised computer chips, according to a blog post by Raza Habib, an AI expert who attended a closed-door meeting with Altman in London two weeks ago. Altman reportedly told the meeting that a lack of graphics processing units (GPUs) was delaying short-term plans, including the rollout of additional features and services. The issue has also made OpenAI’s existing services slower and less reliable, frustrating customers and leading to reluctance to develop enterprise apps on its tech. While OpenAI is sticking with its existing ChatGPT product, Google continues to roll out competing services and open-source rivals are growing in prominence. Altman said the largest models of AI couldn’t be scaled up infinitely and could only be made two or three times larger.
