The sudden blockade left volunteers working overtime to investigate problem users, while researchers struggled to keep their projects and dissertations afloat.
This blockade was just one of the repercussions resulting from Reddit’s decision to restrict external access to its platform. The policy shift caused two months of turmoil, including mass protests and a rebellion by moderators that led to the shutdown of over 2,400 communities out of the 100,000 on the platform. Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, compared these moderators to landed gentry, accusing them of wielding undemocratic power, and highlighting the internal tensions within Reddit’s community.

A thorough vetting process has taken place, with access being reinstated for several hundred moderators. Academic users are next on the list for reinstatement.
