Rappler Wins AI in Journalism Challenge with TLDR Spin-Off, Philippines

Rappler, a Filipino newsroom, emerged as the winner in the AI in Journalism Challenge (AIJC), a competition held at the Splice Beta Journalism Festival in Thailand. The challenge aimed to support projects that enhance newsroom efficiency using AI workflows and tools. Out of the 113 newsrooms that applied, only 12 were selected to participate. Rappler presented TLDR, a spin-off brand that utilizes AI to provide clear and visual content for young media consumers. TLDR converts Rappler stories into text summaries, graphics, and videos. The project will serve as a framework for integrating AI into newsrooms while emphasizing the importance of human critical thinking and creativity. Rappler joins OpenAI in conducting experiments on how AI systems should behave, exploring its adoption in the media industry. The findings will be shared with OpenAI to inform future deliberations. With these developments, Rappler continues to lead the way in embracing AI tools in journalism.
