Workers in the Philippines are embracing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT in their workplaces, a trend termed Bring Your Own AI (BYOAI) according to Microsoft Corp. and LinkedIn Corp. The Work Trend Index 2024 report revealed that 83% of Filipinos are incorporating BYOAI into their professional lives, surpassing the global average of 78% and the regional average of 79%.
Microsoft Philippines CEO Peter Maquera highlighted the accessibility and popularity of tools like ChatGPT, emphasizing the need for companies to channel this enthusiasm towards a more controlled and responsible approach to AI implementation, particularly concerning cybersecurity and data privacy.
The report also noted that the young median age of 25 in the Philippines contributes to the rapid adoption of AI, with both Generation Z and Baby Boomers globally embracing AI tools in the workplace.
Interestingly, 86% of knowledge workers in the Philippines are utilizing generative AI at work, higher than the regional and global averages of 83% and 75%, respectively. Despite this positive trend, 55% of Filipino leaders expressed concerns about their organizations lacking a clear AI implementation plan.
Moreover, the study highlighted the increasing importance of AI skills in hiring, with 70% of Filipino leaders placing significant value on these skills. The demand for AI-related skills is evident in the hiring market, with an increase in mentions of AI in job posts and a rise in users adding AI skills to their profiles on LinkedIn.
Although AI skills are in high demand, soft skills continue to play a vital role in the workforce. Collaboration, communication, and creativity remain essential in utilizing AI tools effectively in the workplace.
The Philippines’ high mobile penetration and proficiency in English provide a strong foundation for integrating AI technologies into various industries. The need for upskilling to meet the evolving demands of the job market is evident, with a projected 68% increase in required skills over the next six years.
The report concluded that while AI is becoming increasingly prevalent in the workplace, achieving a balance between technological advancements and human skills is crucial for driving innovation and productivity.
