OpenAI’s GPT Store delayed to 2024 following leadership chaos
OpenAI has announced that its highly anticipated app store for AI, the GPT Store, will not be launching this year as originally planned. The company now aims to release the store in early 2024, citing unexpected challenges likely stemming from the leadership shakeup that occurred in November.
The news of the delay was revealed through a memo obtained by Axios, which was sent to users and developers. OpenAI stated, we are now planning to launch the GPT Store early next year. While we had expected to release it this month, a few unexpected things have been keeping us busy! The memo also mentioned upcoming improvements, including a better configuration interface and debug messages.
As of now, further details regarding the decision to postpone the launch remain unclear. Contact has been made with OpenAI and other parties for additional information, and any updates will be provided accordingly.
The initial announcement of the GPT Store’s launch raised eyebrows when it was made at OpenAI’s Dev Day conference in November. Although a working mockup of the store and several fine-tuned models known as GPTs were showcased, many questions lingered unanswered.
During a Q&A session with Sam Altman, briefly dethroned CEO, and CTO Mira Murati, concerns were raised about the store’s pricing structure for customers and developer compensation. Their response was somewhat vague, indicating that details were still being ironed out.
Considering the loose launch plan and the subsequent upheaval resulting from the board versus CEO battle, it is not surprising that a delay has occurred. Navigating a major product launch alongside important organizational changes and the upcoming winter holidays would undoubtedly present significant challenges.
For existing OpenAI customers, it’s important to note that GPTs can still be created and shared privately with others. However, they will not be publicly listed or eligible for participation in any revenue-sharing arrangement until the official launch of the GPT Store.
As we await further information and updates from OpenAI, it is evident that the company is striving to fine-tune their offerings and ensure a successful launch of the GPT Store in the near future.
