OpenAI’s GPT Store Flooded with AI Girlfriend Bots, Violating Usage Policy

Date:

OpenAI’s GPT Store is facing a flood of AI girlfriend bots, a violation of the usage policy set by the company. The GPT Store, launched recently, allows users on premium plans to sell and share customized AI models based on OpenAI’s large language models. However, despite the policy explicitly stating that GPTs dedicated to fostering romantic companionship are not allowed, a search for the term girlfriend on the store brings up several AI chatbots offering virtual girlfriends.

An analysis by Quartz revealed at least eight girlfriend chatbots available on the GPT Store, including Korean Girlfriend, Virtual Sweetheart, Your girlfriend Scarlett, and Your AI girlfriend, Tsu. Users who click on these chatbots are prompted with questions such as What does your dream girl look like? and Share with me your darkest secret. These chatbots clearly violate OpenAI’s usage policy.

Relationship chatbots have gained popularity in recent years, with users forming emotional attachments to their AI companions. In fact, statistics from mobile app analytics company data.ai show that a significant number of AI chatbot apps downloaded in the US in 2023 were related to AI friends, girlfriends, or companions.

However, OpenAI’s guidelines strictly prohibit such AI models in the GPT Store. The company warns that these policies can be enforced automatically at submission or retroactively upon further review. It is crucial to maintain the integrity of the GPT Store and ensure compliance with the usage policy.

Since the announcement of the GPT Builder program in November, OpenAI has seen over 3 million GPTs created by users. Access to the GPT Store requires a subscription to one of OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT plans. These plans include ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Enterprise, and the recently launched ChatGPT Team.

It is important for OpenAI to take appropriate actions to curb the inclusion of AI girlfriend bots in the GPT Store and strictly enforce its usage policy. By doing so, the company can maintain the integrity of the platform while ensuring compliance with its guidelines.
