OpenAI Unveils GPT Store for Custom Chatbots, Allowing Users to Develop and Share AI-Powered Chat Assistants
OpenAI has officially launched its GPT Store, which enables users to create and share their own AI-powered chatbots. The launch comes after a delay caused by leadership changes within the company in November 2021. OpenAI’s customers have been quick to take advantage of this new platform, with more than 3 million custom chatbots already developed. These bespoke models cover a wide range of categories, including writing, research, programming, and lifestyle.
Previously, users with a paid version of ChatGPT were able to create chatbots but could not share them for others to use. However, with the introduction of the GPT Store, paying users can now make their chatbots public without any coding knowledge required. This is a significant step forward, as it allows individuals to leverage the power of AI and enhance their productivity through personalized chat assistants.
Several notable use cases of the GPT Store have been highlighted by OpenAI. These include personalized trail recommendations from AllTrails, guidance on improving coding skills through Khan Academy’s Code Tutor, and assistance in designing presentations or social media posts with Canva.
While chatbot creators are not currently able to charge for their creations, OpenAI has announced plans to share revenue with them beginning in the first quarter of 2024. The initiative will initially be rolled out to builders in the United States, who will be compensated based on user engagement.
OpenAI has also introduced a new plan called ChatGPT Team, catering to businesses with fewer than 150 employees. This service offers access to the most advanced models, a collaborative workspace, administrative tools, and higher usage caps. ChatGPT Team is available at a cost of $25 per user per month for an annual subscription or $30 on a month-to-month basis.
The launch of the GPT Store was initially slated for November 2021 and was subsequently postponed multiple times before finalizing this month’s release. The tumultuous leadership changes within OpenAI, including the departure of CEO Sam Altman in November, were cited as reasons for the delay.
