OpenAI CEO hints at European headquarters ahead of talks with EU

Date:

OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, has hinted at the possibility of opening a European headquarters in an interview with Politico ahead of fresh talks with the European Union (EU). Altman’s push for a European presence is fueled by the need to comply with the EU’s AI Act once it is passed, following his brief disagreement with the legislation earlier this year. His change of heart came after an immediate backlash from EU lawmakers, leading to a swift U-turn. Altman’s charm offensive has continued, and he will be meeting with EU President Ursula von der Leyen this week, with talks with EU industry chief Thierry Breton scheduled for next month. OpenAI has experienced explosive growth in recent months, with visits to its website rising by 54.21% to nearly one billion monthly users, positioning the company as one of the fastest-growing worldwide.

OpenAI is a research-based AI company aiming to create safe and beneficial AI for humans. The company has collaborated with some of the world’s foremost researchers in machine learning, interface design, and neuroscience.

Sam Altman is the CEO of OpenAI, succeeding Elon Musk and Greg Brockman in that position. Altman’s background is in tech startups, including appointments as president of Y Combinator and co-founder of Loopt, a location-based social networking application.
