Many people have expressed concern over the risks of advanced AI, including Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. However, the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, recently responded to criticism from Musk and said that the tech mogul is totally wrong about claims he has made about the artificial intelligence company.
Altman made these remarks while speaking in Delhi, India, after being asked about Musk’s claim that OpenAI wasn’t really a nonprofit because of the billions that Microsoft invested in the company. According to reports, Altman responded, I think he’s totally wrong about this stuff. He can sort of say whatever he wants, but I’m proud of what we’re doing, and I think we’re going to make a positive contribution to the world, and I try to stay above all that.
Altman and Musk co-founded OpenAI together in 2015, however, Musk resigned from the board in 2018 citing Tesla‘s work on building automated driving systems. Since then, Musk has been critical of OpenAI, saying that the company has strayed from his original open-source intentions. He has also warned of the dangers of advanced AI, which he believes could threaten humanity.
Despite Altman’s response to Musk’s criticism, both have called for advanced AI to be regulated. In March, Musk joined other tech moguls in signing an open letter that called for a six-month moratorium on the training of systems more advanced than OpenAI‘s GPT-4.
Altman believes that AI is serious and needs to be taken seriously; he added that although it may be a challenge, it is something that can still be managed. In contrast, Musk has not been idle with his vision of AI; he started his own AI chatbot in April called TruthGPT and launched a new AI company called X.AI.
