The era of ChatGPT Plugins is coming to an end, with OpenAI announcing a transition towards GPTs as the primary mode of enhancing AI-driven conversations and application capabilities. As of March 19, users will no longer be able to install new plugins or start new conversations with existing ones. However, ongoing plugin conversations will continue to function until April 9, allowing for a grace period to wrap up activities.
This move comes as developers found it more convenient to build GPTs compared to plugins, with hundreds of thousands of GPTs available in contrast to just over 1,000 plugins at their peak. OpenAI notes that GPTs provide full feature parity with plugins and offer new functionalities developed based on user feedback.
For users attached to specific plugins, OpenAI recommends searching for GPT replacements in the GPT store using the search functionality. For example, the Link Reader plugin is now available as Browser Pro in the form of a GPT.
The difference between ChatGPT Plugins and GPTs lies in their approach to enhancing AI-driven conversations and applications. GPTs offer the same capabilities as plugins, with added benefits and a wider array of functionalities.
In the upcoming feature, we will highlight some of the best GPTs available post the retirement of ChatGPT Plugins. Stay tuned for more information on this transition and how it will impact user experiences moving forward.
