Reddit has partnered with OpenAI to allow the AI company access to user posts on the social media platform. The deal will give ChatGPT direct access to Reddit’s content, enabling OpenAI’s AI models to train on the data. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
This collaboration follows a similar agreement that Reddit made with Google earlier this year, where Google reportedly paid $60 million annually for access to Reddit’s content.
Reddit emphasized its large and active user community, highlighting the importance of using AI technology to enhance the user experience. OpenAI will leverage Reddit’s Data API to provide ChatGPT with real-time content from the platform, enhancing users’ ability to discover and engage with Reddit communities.
Additionally, this partnership will enable Reddit to introduce new AI-powered features for its users and moderators. OpenAI will also become a Reddit advertising partner as part of the agreement.
Both companies expressed excitement about the collaboration, with OpenAI’s COO Brad Lightcap stating that they are looking forward to enriching ChatGPT with up-to-date and relevant information from Reddit. Reddit’s CEO Steve Huffman emphasized the platform’s role as a vast archive of authentic human conversations, expressing a desire to connect users to the content they are seeking.
To address potential privacy concerns, Reddit assured users that the partnership aligns with its commitment to privacy rights and its Public Content Policy. The agreement will not change Reddit’s Data API Terms or Developer Terms, and content accessed through the API cannot be used for commercial purposes without Reddit’s approval.
OpenAI has entered into similar content agreements with other organizations in the past year, including German media publisher Axel Springer and the Associated Press.
The partnership between Reddit and OpenAI reflects the growing trend of utilizing AI technology to enhance user experiences and provide valuable content to audiences across various platforms.
