Ola Founder Bhavish Aggarwal Unveils Startup Krutrim To Cater To Indian Market’s AI Needs
Ola co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has announced the launch of his latest venture, Krutrim, which aims to provide artificial intelligence (AI) solutions tailored to the Indian market. The startup’s flagship product is the Krutrim AI chatbot, capable of generating responses in English, Hindi, and eight other Indian languages.
Aggarwal believes that Krutrim’s mission extends beyond chatbots. The startup intends to develop an AI stack that encompasses semiconductor and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) designs, as well as Large Language Models (LLMs). They plan to invest in various sectors such as healthcare, drug discovery, material science, education, agriculture, and consumer-facing applications.
While Krutrim is an independent entity, Aggarwal confirmed that Ola and Ola Electric have invested in the startup. The extent of their investment remains undisclosed. Reports suggest that Krutrim raised $24 million in debt funding from Matrix Partners.
The Krutrim AI chatbot stands out by offering support for 22 Indian languages, going beyond the usual Hindi and English. It boasts generative capabilities in 10 Indian languages and has been trained using a vast dataset of over two trillion tokens specific to Indian languages.
Aggarwal emphasized the need for AI models to be trained on unique data sets capturing India’s multicultural and multilingual context. Krutrim’s training process involved a team of computer scientists based in Bengaluru and San Francisco, although specific details about the data sources were not disclosed.
Krutrim plans to make its AI chatbot available to select individuals who have signed up, with a public release scheduled for January 2024. Open APIs will be accessible to all developers by February 2024.
Ola intends to integrate Krutrim’s technology across its group of companies, utilizing it in functions such as sales, service, support, and other operational processes. Aggarwal believes that Krutrim’s linguistic capabilities make it valuable across various domains, including education and business communications. The platform incorporates cutting-edge techniques in secure AI to minimize inappropriate responses.
Looking ahead, Krutrim aims to develop indigenous data centers and advance its AI infrastructure. Prototypes are expected by mid-2024, with a production roadmap set for release by the end of 2025. Aggarwal stressed the importance of designing silicon chips in India for AI operations, and the company is actively working on this aspect.
Aggarwal’s vision is to make AI a defining aspect of India’s future in terms of both economy and culture. By focusing on India’s unique linguistic and cultural context, Krutrim aims to create AI solutions that effectively serve the Indian market and cater to its specific needs.
