Mounting concerns over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfakes in cyber security have been revealed in a new research study conducted by Integrity360. The survey, which involved 205 IT security decision makers, highlighted the growing worries regarding cybercriminals using deepfakes to target organizations.
According to the findings, 68% of respondents expressed concerns about the use of deepfakes by cybercriminals. Deepfake technology has already demonstrated its potential with instances such as the video of Volodymyr Zelensky spreading disinformation. This highlights the need for businesses to prepare themselves for defending against deepfake attacks and distinguishing between real and fake content.
Furthermore, 59% of respondents agreed that AI is increasing the number of cyber security attacks. This aligns with the noticeable shift in attack methods, with offensive AI being used for malware creation and the creation of phishing messages that closely resemble legitimate emails in language, tone, and design.
While 46% of respondents disagreed with the statement that they do not understand the impact of AI on cyber security, the survey highlighted a potential knowledge gap among CIOs. Specifically, 42% of CIOs indicated a lack of understanding of AI’s impact on cyber security. This underscores the importance of educational efforts to ensure that c-level executives are well-informed about the role of AI in protecting organizations against cyber threats.
Despite these concerns, a significant majority (73%) of respondents agreed that AI is becoming increasingly important for security operations and incident response. The industry recognizes the potential of AI to enhance security practices and its defensive and offensive applications in cyber security.
The survey also revealed that 71% of respondents believe that AI is improving the speed and accuracy of incident response. This is attributed to AI’s ability to analyze large amounts of data in real-time and identify potential threats.
Moreover, 67% of respondents stated that using AI enhances the efficiency of cyber security operations. By automating routine tasks, AI allows cyber security professionals to focus on more complex and strategic aspects of their work.
As AI technologies continue to evolve, their integration into cyber security will follow suit. Organizations must proactively embrace AI while also addressing the challenges it presents to ensure their cyber security defenses keep pace.
With mounting concerns over the use of AI and deepfakes in cyber security, it is imperative for businesses to stay vigilant and develop effective strategies to defend against these evolving threats. Recognizing the potential impact and understanding AI’s role in cyber security will be critical for organizations in safeguarding their digital assets and maintaining security in the face of growing cyber threats.
