Sandhya Devanathan, the India head of Meta, considers India a priority market due to its strong macroeconomic growth, digital infrastructure, and the popularity of Meta’s apps in the country.
In an interview, Devanathan stated that India’s new Digital Personal Data Protection legislation has provided a framework and clarity for tech companies. She believes that the legislation is a great step in balancing user protection with innovation. Meta welcomes constructive regulations and will wait for the detailed rules to be announced.
Misinformation has become a serious concern on social media platforms, and Meta is determined to crack down on false information. Devanathan highlighted how Meta is utilizing AI to proactively curb hateful content. Almost 85% of harmful content is removed by AI even before it can be moderated by a human.
With India heading for Lok Sabha elections next year, Meta will continue its efforts to ensure election integrity. India is one of Meta’s largest user bases globally, with 400 million users of Facebook alone. The possibilities offered by the Indian market are limitless, with strong macroeconomic fundamentals and a growing digital infrastructure.
Devanathan also emphasized the significance of small businesses using Meta platforms and tools in India. Many businesses are leveraging Meta to establish their presence on the internet and connect with customers. India’s vision of a USD 1 trillion digital economy by 2030 provides immense opportunities for tech companies like Meta.
Addressing concerns about Facebook losing appeal among teens and young adults in key markets, Devanathan clarified that Facebook continues to see traction and relevance across all age groups in India. India is a priority market for Meta, where the company tests and develops innovative products.
In terms of regulations, Devanathan expressed Meta’s support for constructive regulations and the balance between user protection and innovation. She believes that the Digital Personal Data Protection Act has provided clarity and framework for tech companies. Meta is waiting for the rules to be established.

Meta has also established partnerships with 11 fact-checkers across multiple languages, the largest partnership of its kind globally.
