Mercedes-Benz is expanding its use of artificial intelligence by integrating ChatGPT into the voice control of its vehicles. This will enhance the MBUX Voice Assistant’s Hey Mercedes, making it even more intuitive, the company says. An optional beta programme for the update will be available June 16th, 2023 in the US for more than 900,000 MBUX-fitted vehicles. Customers will have two methods to participate: they may use the Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta programme voice command from their vehicle or join through the Mercedes me app. Through Azure OpenAI Service, Mercedes-Benz is integrating ChatGPT into the MBUX system, taking advantage of the enterprise-grade features of Microsoft’s cloud and AI platform.
Mercedes-Benz states that MBUX Voice Assistant has already set industry standards and stands out for its intuitive operation and extensive command portfolio. The ChatGPT will complement the existing voice control by making use of a broader language model that increases natural language understanding and expands on command topics. Users will now be able to conduct conversations with the voice assistant, benefiting from natural dialogue and follow-up questions. Mercedes-Benz ensures user data privacy and protection with complete transparency over the data collected and its purpose.
The integration between Mercedes-Benz and Microsoft is significant, and it aligns very well with Mercedes-Benz’s AI principles, making innovative AI accessible to the customers and mitigating risks. The US-based beta programme will start with ChatGPT and Mercedes-Benz developers, helping them to prioritise future enhancements. The beta programme is expected to last for up to three months and will result in improvements to the existing voice assistant, as well as define the strategies for more significant language models in markets and languages.
