Facebook parent company Meta was recently slapped with a record $1.3 billion fine by the European Union over data transfer to U.S. The social media giant had argued that it would affect Europeans’ access to its services, but an appeal was rejected on this issue. Meta has 17 out of its 21 data centres located in the U.S and many companies like TikTok also rely on overseas data transfers.

Microsoft recently scored a victory when a U.S. judge stopped a group of gamers from blocking its planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The gamers had argued that the merger would be harmful for competition, but Microsoft had disagreed citing that it would be positive for gamers. The formidable $69 Billion deal had also faced resistance in the UK, the U.S, the EU, China and South Korea.

At a recently held AI Forward event in San Francisco, OpenAI President Greg Brockman discussed topics like AI policies and regulation. He proposed the idea of a regulatory body to ensure safety standards and mentioned taking a cue from Wikipedia’s model of editing articles to ensure uniformity of viewpoints. Brockman also urged governments to create a framework for developing AI products without causing harm.
