Improving Communication in the Hospital with ChatGPT: An ER Doctor’s Perspective

Date:

Dr. Joshua Tamayo-Sarver is an emergency room (ER) doctor who has almost 14 years of experience in the field, yet he still finds it difficult to communicate complicated medical issues to his patients. And so, he turned to ChatGPT – a tool for creating conversation-based solutions – to improve his communication skills and aid his patients.

Tamayo-Sarver has experienced the utility of ChatGPT firsthand. A female patient in her 40s, experiencing chest pain was calmed by the doctor’s creative use of ChatGPT for explanation. He used a creative medical metaphor to describe the doctor’s implementation of the CT scan – that of ‘bandages inside the body.’

With the help of the AI, he was able to explain the situation in an understandable way, a feat that would have otherwise been difficult.

Though he doesn’t recommend using ChatGPT for diagnosis nor anything that requires thinking and verification, he does suggest its use in scenarios where it can help in providing creative solutions.

The AI stocks up and retains a vast amount of knowledge, which can be accessed with relative ease. However, the downside to it is the potential for misdiagnosis, due to its inability to understand the complexity of medical issues.

As artificial intelligence is making great strides in medical field, it is important to understand that it is still no replacement to a doctor and that its implementation should be done with caution to avoid professional and medical disaster.

ChatGPT, founded in 2019, is an AI-powered conversational platform. It features a library of AI-powered bots designed to chat with customers and simulate human conversations. ChatGPT is designed to assist companies and organizations in reducing customer service costs, improving customer engagement and providing 24/7 customer support. It supports multiple languages and is compatible with multiple messaging platforms, like Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and SMS.

His experience and use of ChatGPT to improve communication with his patients has been successful and he continues to use it on shift for more difficult cases. He believes the AI can be used to develop creative solutions and make complicated and nuanced medical issues easily understandable for his patients, and praised its accidential capabilities of providing creative metaphors.
