Recent times have seen the increased use of advanced AI programs such as ChatGPT, posing a threat to certain occupations. However, the recent MLIV Pulse survey with 678 respondents has given parents of today’s kindergarteners reason to suggest their children take up a career in healthcare, as it provides greater job stability and promise than any other job sector.
A whopping 40% of respondents stated that healthcare is the ideal job path for this younger generation, who would otherwise be at risk of being displaced by generative AI. The favourable demographics of the elderly population who require medical care, puts this sector in demand and is likely to gain a career-advantage to those within the medical field.
Meanwhile, tech and finance continue to be the most lucrative career paths, according to 52% of 556 professional investors and 48% of 122 retail investors. In spite of recent layoffs within the sector, tech is seen as vital conversational piece in a world that is ever-increasingly digitized and dependant on virtual platforms.
Andrew Challenger of the human-resources consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. claims that the gap between these two industries may soon close, as technology is gradually becoming increasingly pay-competitive. Commonly, tech jobs are believed to provide job security as long-term employment and career development prospects as AI grows and technology develops over the next couple of decades.
However, a few of the survey’s respondents suggested opting for a trade school, or attempting a career as a plumber or electrician, as these jobs involve manual labour and are hard to replace with AI. Furthermore, a recent Goldman Sachs report stipulates that 300 million full-time jobs worldwide are in the threat of automation.
For the finance sector, a combination of the recent layoffs and the UBS Group AG absorbing Credit Suisse Group AG caused a majority of the respondents to be hesitant. Also, it’s worth noting that banks such as JPMorgan Chase & Co. expressed caution when it came to hiring, with plans of keeping headcount flat for the rest of the year.
Most survey participants seemed to have faith in the value of an undergraduate degree, despite the associated time and monetary costs, as long as it has been well-chosen.
Overall, the MLA Pulse survey reveals that a career in healthcare would likely be the most promising option for today’s kindergarteners, given the rise of AI technology and the potential threat it might pose to other jobs.
