Groundbreaking AI Predicts Heart Attack Risk 10 Years Ahead, Saving Lives
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize the way we predict and prevent heart attacks. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford, funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), reveals that AI technology can accurately predict a person’s risk of having a heart attack up to 10 years in advance. This breakthrough could save thousands of lives while significantly improving treatment outcomes for almost half of all patients.
The study focused on enhancing the accuracy of cardiac CT scans, which are commonly used to detect blockages or narrowing in the arteries. By analyzing the data of over 40,000 patients who underwent routine cardiac CT scans at eight UK hospitals, the researchers were able to develop an AI tool that accurately predicts the risk of a future heart attack.
Interestingly, the study revealed that some patients who were often discharged from the hospital after presenting with chest pain were actually at a high risk of experiencing a heart attack within the next decade, despite showing no signs of heart artery disease. This underscores the importance of accurately assessing a patient’s risk to ensure appropriate treatment and prevention strategies are implemented.
When the AI-generated risk scores were presented to medical professionals for 744 patients, the treatment plans for 45% of them were altered as a result. This highlights the potential impact of AI in improving patient outcomes by providing clinicians with a comprehensive and accurate picture of a patient’s risk profile.
Currently, approximately 350,000 people in the UK undergo CT scans each year. However, the British Heart Foundation warns that many patients with undetectable narrowings in their arteries still succumb to heart attacks. The implementation of the AI tool across the National Health Service (NHS) could help prevent thousands of avoidable deaths caused by heart attacks annually.
