Google, a tech giant founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, is set to unveil the latest edition of its AI-based conversational service -PaLM 2- to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4 model. Google’s initial experimental conversational AI platform, Bard, is powered by its lightweight LaMDA model. This smaller model is designed to run on fewer computing resources while offering an enhanced chat experience to its users. In March 2021, Google expanded Bard’s availability to the public, opening up its platform at bard.google.com.
However, Bard wasn’t powerful enough to compete with ChatGPT, a language-based chatbot. To stay competitive and remain atop the Artificial Intelligence (AI) conversation industry, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Google would upgrade Bard to the advanced PaLM model.
Today, CNBC reported that Google will officially release the new version of its AI-powered model -PaLM 2- during the Google I/O conference this week. The second version of PaLM is capable of providing better responses with its ability to reason, answer math queries and program with code. Moreover, PaLM 2 supports over 100 languages and is known by its internal codename, “Unified Language Model”.
Google also plans to introduce new features such as an AI-based image creator that can generate objects from text descriptions. This feature sets them in direct competition with Bing Image Creator, Dall-E and other similar services. Furthermore, there are reports of Google working on various iterations of Bard like Multi-Bard, Big Bard and Giant Bard.
Google’s focus on AI-powered conversational services is clear in this new development. With the new version of PaLM, alongside the development of new services, they are looking to strengthen their foothold in the competitive AI chatbot sector and move closer closer to surpassing OpenAI’s GPT-4.
