Good News for Indian Chilli Farmers: New Hybrid NCH-6889 to Combat Black Thrips Menace in Chilli Crop from Nuziveedu Seeds Research

Date:

India is currently facing quite a tragedy due to the pest, Black Thr ips, which is spreading across its chilli crop field. Fortunately, a step towards a solution has been provided by Nuziveedu Seeds – a 50 year-old research company in seeds, which has identified a new chilli hybrid – NCH-6889 – to help the country’s chilli farmers deal with this menace. The newborn pest, Thrips parvispinus, is classified by the South East Asia as one of the pests of quarantine importance, causing huge damage to the chilli crop. This is mainly due to its colonization of flowers and underside of leaves where its nymphs, or young ones, restrict themselves to remaining under the surface of the leaves. Both adults and nymphs deteriorate the plants by sucking the sap out and damaging the foliage. This can eventually lead to flower drop and reduction in fruit set, resulting in an overall loss of yield. Such has been the extent of peril due to this pest that its heavy infestation in 2021 – triggered by the North East monsoon – has caused up to a 70 percent crop loss, despite the spray of several chemicals.

To manage this problem efficiently, Nuziveedu Seeds has come up with a new Black thrips tolerant chilli hybrid – NCH-6889. This solution has been met with wide approval, as it has been tested for performance at multiple locations in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and other Eastern States for the last two years. This not only gives the Indian farmers the much needed solution to the pest infestation, but also reduces their cost of cultivation and improves the quality and yield of chilli crop.
