Mercedes-Benz is teaming up with Microsoft to bring in-car artificial intelligence (AI) to more than 900,000 cars in the United States. The German automaker’s MBUX infotainment system, which uses AI to enhance the driving experience, will now feature ChatGPT, the popular chatbot launched by Open AI in November 2020. ChatGPT leverages a large language model, enabling it to understand natural language better than many other voice assistants, as well as expand the number of topics it can respond to. Mercedes owners will therefore be able to have full-blown conversations with their in-car AI, using it to carry out tasks such as changing seat positions, adjusting ambient lighting, making phone calls, and requesting information about their destination, among other things. The update to the MBUX infotainment system will rollout to testers in June 2023 via an over-the-air download. To opt-in to the beta program, Mercedes owners can either ask their car’s voice assistant to join or enroll through the Mercedes me app.
