Musk assured users that this feature would be lifted soon, but emphasized the necessity of immediate action to counteract the ongoing data scraping.
Musk expressed frustration regarding the additional strain placed on Twitter servers to cope with the increased traffic due to the actions of AI startups. He lamented the need to quickly mobilize backup servers to accommodate what he described as the outrageous valuation of these startups.
Given the detrimental effect of data scraping on user experience, Musk open to suggestions for tackling the issue. Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, offered several solutions including banning scraping through Twitter’s terms of service, enhancing the platform’s infosec engineering, and taking legal action against companies engaging in large-scale commercial abuse.
Musk responded by stating that scraping content is already prohibited by Twitter’s terms and conditions. He highlighted the challenges of dealing with organizations that disregard these rules by masking their IPs through proxy servers or utilizing seemingly legitimate organizations. Musk further assured that Twitter would pursue legal action against the culprits who stole their data and expected the matter to be resolved in court within the next two to three years.
In December, Elon Musk had temporarily suspended OpenAI’s access to Twitter due to perceived insufficient compensation for the platform’s data. OpenAI was allegedly paying around $2 million yearly to scrape Twitter data to support the development of its AI chatbot, as reported by The New York Times.
Twitter has yet to comment on the situation outside of normal working hours.
