The digital age has made it easier for remote workers to secretly hold multiple full-time jobs, and this became even more accessible with the introduction of artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and its ilk. According to a survey conducted by the job site Monster, 37% of respondents revealed that they had more than one job in the same year.
By using cutting-edge technology like ChatGPT, unemployed people are able to increase their workload from two jobs to three or even four jobs in the same amount of time, which increases the risk of burnout or getting caught. This has already been confirmed by a Vice report, where people spoke about their multiple parallel jobs without revealing their real names. One of the anonymous respondents stated that they’re able to make up to $800,000 by juggling three or four full-time jobs using ChatGPT.
It is unsure how many people are using A.I. tools for multi-jobbing, but recently, management professor Ethan Mollick attempted to prove that this is possible. In the experiment he conducted, Mollick gave ChatGPT, GPT-4, MidJourney, and other AI tools 30 minutes to work on a business project. The results were astonishing – the AI managed to complete a task that would have otherwise taken a team and multiple days of work.
Moreover, with the pandemic normalizing remote work, it became even less difficult for remote workers to carry out two or more jobs simultaneously since their employers often focus on the results, rather than on whether the workers are actually doing their job for them.
One person who was mentioned in the report was Kevin O’Leary, a judge on the show Shark Tank, who commented last month that employers don’t usually care when the job gets done, “as long as it gets done”.
The need to work multiple jobs may be emerging from the continually modernizing advancements of technology and its ability to complete complex tasks quickly. According to Chamath Palihapitiya, a venture capitalist, these advancements allow companies to create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with only a few people, much more quickly than with a team of 40 or 50 individuals as before.
ChatGPT and its capabilities have revolutionized the way in which remote workers are able to control their job workload. It is clear that, going forward, companies will start to adjust to this changing paradigm.
