The United States government has launched a $20 million contest to strengthen its cybersecurity defenses against the escalating use of artificial intelligence (AI) by malicious actors. This move comes as officials continue to raise concerns about cyber threats posed by foreign adversaries. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), in collaboration with leading U.S. technology firms including Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI, will lead the two-year challenge.
Anne Neuberger, the U.S. government’s deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technology, highlighted the race between offense and defense in cybersecurity. She acknowledged that malicious actors are already leveraging AI to identify vulnerabilities and develop malicious software more quickly. Neuberger’s comments echo those made by Samy Khoury, Canada’s cybersecurity chief, who stated that AI is being used for various nefarious activities, such as creating phishing emails, writing malicious code, and spreading disinformation.
The contest aims to address an emerging threat that experts are still trying to fully comprehend. In recent years, U.S. companies have released generative AI tools like ChatGPT, enabling users to create convincing videos, images, texts, and computer code. Chinese companies have also introduced similar models to keep pace. These tools have the potential to facilitate mass hacking campaigns and the dissemination of fake profiles on social media for spreading false information and propaganda.
The objective of the DARPA AI challenge is to foster a larger community of cyber defenders who can leverage generative AI to strengthen cyber defenses. The Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), a group focused on enhancing open source software security, will be responsible for ensuring the winning software code is put to immediate use, according to the U.S. government.
