OpenAI’s ChatGPT is introducing a new feature that will personalize its responses, giving users more control and allowing for a tailored conversational experience. With custom instructions, users can set preferences that ChatGPT will consider for all future conversations.
Think of these preferences as filters while shopping for your favorite shoe on an app. Just like selecting color, size, and brand, ChatGPT will enable you to establish certain ‘rules’ for its responses.
OpenAI explains, ChatGPT will consider your custom instructions for every conversation going forward. The model will consider the instructions every time it responds, so you won’t have to repeat your preferences or information in every conversation.
For instance, imagine you’re a cook preparing food for a family of four. You can set a custom instruction stating that whenever you ask for a recipe from ChatGPT, the ingredients and cooking techniques should be adjusted for four people. So when you ask ChatGPT about the recipe for Carbonara, it will provide you with the appropriate quantity of ingredients needed to make the dish for a family of four.
The custom instructions feature for ChatGPT is currently available in beta for Plus plan users and will be expanded to all users in the coming weeks. This new capability is accessible globally, except in the UK and EU.
To set custom instructions, ChatGPT Plus users can opt into the beta for custom instructions. On the web, simply click on your name, go to Settings, navigate to Beta features, and opt into Custom instructions. Moving forward, you will find the Custom instructions option in the menu under your name.
On iOS, head to Settings, then New Features, and enable Custom instructions. You will then be able to access Custom instructions in the settings.
By allowing users to impart custom instructions, OpenAI empowers individuals to shape their interactions with ChatGPT. This feature not only enhances user experience but also saves time, as users no longer need to repeat their preferences for every conversation.
