ChatGPT is an Artificial Intelligence chatbot that has been making waves in industries such as scriptwriters, lawyers, and telemarketers, who are concerned about the potential of the technology to take over their roles. Recent research published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal has thrown a curveball: ChatGPT was found to be more empathetic than human doctors when answering questions orally.
In the study, experts gathered data online from a 195 publicly asked medical questions on Reddit AskDocs forum, whose answers were then sourced from human doctors. These same questions were fed into ChatGPT, which had responses deemed to be of higher quality and more empathetic that the human doctors. A three-person panel consisting of licensed healthcare professionals rated ChatGPT’s answers as “very good” or “empathetic” more than 75% of the time, and doctors only received a 22% or 5% rating respectively.
According to one of the study’s co-authors, John Ayers from the University of California San Diego, the results evidently revealed that ChatGPT fared far better than doctors when it comes to empathetic response and quality of answers. While this does not necessarily mark a quick displacement of physician, ChatGPT could thrive in assisting doctors elevate their patient and assistance communication, while cutting down professional burnout.
