ChatGPT, the AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, continues to dominate the global market, especially in India. Despite recent corporate turmoil at OpenAI, ChatGPT remains the most popular AI chatbot worldwide. However, CEO Sam Altman and his team face increasing competition not only from other tech companies but also from rival technologies.
Recent reports by data.ai and writerbuddy.ai highlight the extent of ChatGPT’s dominance in India. The chatbot, based on a large language model, is primarily used on mobile devices in India, the US, and Brazil. According to writerbuddy.ai’s study, ChatGPT registered an impressive 14.6 billion visits, averaging 1.2 billion visits per month. Out of the top 50 AI platforms analyzed, ChatGPT accounted for 60% of the traffic.
Mobile devices are the preferred means of access for 58% of ChatGPT users, with a significant gender disparity as 74.16% of users are male. Despite competition from rivals like Perplexity AI and Character AI, ChatGPT remains dominant in the AI tools sector, with an average usage duration of 30 minutes.
The writerbuddy.ai study also revealed that ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool in the US, followed by India and Brazil. Furthermore, data.ai reported that India accounted for the highest number of ChatGPT app installations worldwide, closely followed by the US. The mobile version of ChatGPT achieved a remarkable 110 million downloads and generated approximately $28.6 million in global consumer spending. In just one week after its launch on Google Play, the app reached a record of 18 million new installations.
Despite its popularity, ChatGPT faces competition from various open and closed-source models, including Microsoft Bing, Google Bard, Anthropic Claude, Inflection Pi, and Perplexity.ai. Developers also have multiple options, such as APIs offered by Amazon Web Services, Azure, Cohere, Google Cloud, Hugging Face, and OpenAI.
OpenAI’s journey over the past year has been far from smooth, with the unexpected sacking and subsequent reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman. The turmoil had an impact on the company’s estimated $86-billion valuation, requiring Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to take swift action to protect his company’s investment in OpenAI. Despite the challenges, Altman expressed his commitment to building beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI).
OpenAI is now focusing on three priorities, as stated by Altman: advancing research, investing in full-stack safety efforts, and increasing deployment speed. The company has made significant product releases, including GPT-4 Turbo with a 128K context window, GPT-4 with Vision, and Dall-E 3 API.
ChatGPT’s success does not guarantee a smooth path ahead for OpenAI. The future of AI will involve not only large language model-based chatbots like ChatGPT but also smaller and more specialized models that consume less energy and are less expensive to train.
As the competition intensifies and technology evolves, it remains to be seen how OpenAI and ChatGPT will continue to adapt and maintain their position in the market.
