Can ChatGPT Be a Doctor? It is no secret that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being developed rapidly and has the potential to revolutionize healthcare. The latest AI language model GPT-4 from OpenAI has even passed the US medical-licensing exam, making many scratch the surface on this topic.
One physician stated that GPT-4 was better than many doctors he’s seen when it comes to clinical diagnosis. This begs to ask the ultimate question: Can an AI model really replace human medical personnel?
At this moment, it’s difficult to answer this question conclusively. AI technology is constantly improving and advancing, and new breakthroughs offer continuous hope for AI to replace humans. However, AI also has many limitations and ethical issues to consider.
For example, open-ended conversations between a patient and AI model can prove difficult due to the AI’s lack of comprehensive understanding when it comes to more subtle nuances. Also, AI is not infallible and can have biases which can interfere with making the best medical decision.
OpenAI has become the major leader in a field of research to create language-generation AI models such as GPT-2 and GPT-3, responsible for making headlines with its capabilities. Since its inception in 2020, OpenAI has grown to become part of the Microsoft family, and its GPT-4 model proves why. Using data to solve language problems, GPT-4 was created to fill in the blanks for human conversations, replacing the need for human interaction – perfect for a medical way forward.
On the other hand, Jawed Karim, the co-founder of YouTube, has recently been subject to speculation connecting him to the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. After discovering a hidden manifesto created by Satoshi on Apple’s Mac systems, many have questioned if Karim is the cryptocurrency mastermind.
Meanwhile, the Revolve clothing company has teamed up with the AI-creative studio Maison Meta to create AI-generated billboards, giving us more looks into the possibilities with AI. Eric Schmidt, previous CEO of Google, weighed in on the government and AI, saying that AI must take a “pause” in order to create guardrails to mitigate issues before the government steps in.
TikTok has also revolutionized how dancers and companies are now able to find each other with ease. As the “quest for longevity” sweeps the nation, Silicon Valley’s powerful elites are turning to unique diets for a longer lifespan. AI and Machine Learning enthusiasts now have a range of podcasts to choose from to supplement their knowledge, such as “In Machine We Trust,” and “Me, Myself and AI.”
In San Fransisco, the police are still investigating the case of Bob Lee’s death, stating there are “some good development.” Samsung also recently released their latest phone; the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus, giving tech pundits something to compare. And finally, Ram created an electric truck called the Ram 1500 REV to compete with Tesla and Ford’s electric models.
At this time, the development of AI has not advanced to a point where it can reliably and competently make complex medical decisions, or fully replace a medical staff. Despite GPT-4’s success passing the medical-licensing exam, AI technology still has ethical, legal and moral issues to address before it can become a trusted healthcare provider.
But AI does move us one step closer to a future filled with self-learning algorithms which can be applied to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of medical illnesses. Therefore, whether or not ChatGPT can become a doctor in the near future remains to be seen.
