Apple Prohibits Employees from Utilizing Artificial Intelligence – An Analysis by the Financial Post

Date:

Apple has taken a stringent stance on the use of AI and chatbot tools by its employees, according to a recently cited document from the Wall Street Journal. This effort is seen as a move to develop its own AI technology to prevent potential confidential data leakage.

On Thursday, technology giant OpenAI presented its AI chatbot ChatGPT which was reportedly designed for use on Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad. The company’s venture, which is powered by Microsoft, has been recognized for its capabilities, such as answer questions, writing reports, mimicking the activity of a human and is believed to have become the source of Apple’s concerns over sensitive data.

John Gianandrea was appointed by Apple in 2018 to lead their AI team, and since then the company has invested into several AI startups. Additionally, the company’s CEO Tim Cook voiced his apprehensions on developments in genetic AI in their latest quarterly earnings report. “I think it’s very important to be careful how we approach these things,” said Cook. “And there are a number of issues that need to be resolved, as discussed in various places, but the possibilities are certainly very interesting.”

OpenAI is one of the famous names in the world of artificial intelligence, with its creation of GPT-3, a revolutionary language model. This non-profit organization is largely funded by Microsoft, with additional support from other prominent companies such as Amazon, NVIDIA, and Facebook.

John Gianandrea previously served as the head of search giant Google’s AI division, where he held various technical leadership positions for almost two decades. He made a dramatic move to Apple last year where he now serves as the senior vice president of AI, with direct reporting to Cook. Gianandrea is also known as one of the key voices in the development of Apple’s custom chips used in their latest devices. With this, Gianandrea appears to be pushing Apple into the forefront of AI development.

Apple’s recent decision to restrict the use of ChatGPT and other third-party AI tools highlights their dedication to creating their own AI technology. With Gianandrea’s expertise in this area, Apple is certainly on the right path to develop groundbreaking machines.
