On Thursday, India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah suggested five major areas to strengthen the approach of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the meeting of the heads of the group’s member-states for prevention and elimination of emergency situations. The identified five areas are Confidence Building Measures in Asia, Collective Responsibility Approach, Expanded Cooperation in Communication and Information Sharing, Identification of Priority Areas, and Usage of Newly Developed Technologies in Disaster Resilience Capacity Building.
Shah highlighted the importance of a collective responsibility approach for disaster resilience, and emphasized that pooling resources and expertise amongst member states would strengthen the region’s overall disaster resilience approach. He explained that effective communication and information sharing would facilitate a timely, specialized and coordinated response to emergent situations. The minister further suggested the use of advanced technology like Artificial Intelligence, Remote Sensing, Drone Technology, and Data Analytics to improve the Early Warning Systems, Disaster Risk Assessment and Response.
Shah mentioned India’s full membership in the SCO since 2017, and its commitment to exploring new opportunities and sharing experiences towards enhancing the role of the organization. He also highlighted India’s dedication towards Disaster Risk Reduction, noting that the country has an efficient and accurate early warning system for disasters like droughts, floods, lightning, heat waves, cold waves, and cyclones.
