AI tools have helped rescue John Lennon’s vocals for what may be the last Beatles record. In an interview with The Times, Paul McCartney said that AI was used to extract Lennon’s voice from an old cassette recording. The technology was also used to separate the Beatles’ voices from background noise and instrumentation in the recent documentary Get Back. This allowed McCartney to duet with his late bandmate while touring last year. Unlike other recent AI tracks, there’s no suggestion in the interview that AI has been used to generate entirely new deepfake vocals. The technology has also been applied to the 2022 remaster of the Beatles album Revolver. The dialogue editor of Get Back, Emile de la Rey, is credited with developing the technology that made the resurrection of Lennon’s voice possible.
