Artifact, a personalized news aggregator from the Instagram co-founders, is further embracing the power of AI with a new feature that is capable of summarizing news articles for readers. With just the tap of a button, users can now get a summarised version of any article. Artifact is also jazzing up the feature by offering to summarise stories in fun formats like “Explain Like I’m Five”, Generation Z speech and even emojis.
The AI-powered summarization is made possible through OpenAI’s technology and API. However, the company reminds users to read the full article instead of relying solely on the summary. There is always a chance the AI algorith can make mistakes and therefore the full article should be read and compared with the summary.
In February, Artifact made its public launch with the idea of personalizing news experience for users without trapping them in a “filter bubble” like Facebook does. The app is also verified for certain standards of integrity including fact-checking and corrections process, transparency of funding and much more.
Recently, Artifact has also added a social discussion feature that allows readers to comment on articles, as well as upvote and downvote comments left by others. As of today, the app has 240,000 users all over the world, with it ranking as the #115th in the News section in the U.S. App Store.
Artifact is closely associated with its founders, the founding team of Instagram. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the Instagram co-founders who had previously lead the highly successful photo-sharing mobile app recently started the news app. The app doubles down on the promises it made before launch by introducing features to make it more reader-friendly, appealing and informative.
