Date:

Boston Children’s Hospital is leading the way in healthcare AI (artificial intelligence) by hiring an in-house expert focus on ChatGPT. This new role within the hospital’s Innovation and Digital Health Accelerator team will help the healthcare organization establish use cases for the widely-touted AI technology.

John Brownstein, PhD, Chief Innovation Officer at Boston Children’s told Becker’s that the hospital is looking to hire a “prompt engineer” who can work with large language models such as ChatGPT in order to identify relevant use cases and effectively train a workforce on proper uses for the technology. Dr. Brownstein is excited about the prospect of AI tools increasing efficiency and reducing employee burnout.

It is becoming increasingly important for healthcare organizations to properly use AI, as fewer than half of them are planning to pilot a program utilizing the technology in 2023. Dr. Brownstein exclaims that clinical documentation and data analysis is especially suited for AI, yet caution is necessary when the AI is tasked to generate something new.

Boston Children’s Hospital is specifically looking to use AI to reduce the workload on doctors and staff by using it to automatically develop post-discharge notes, respond to emails, and other tasks that can lead to physician burnout. With the help of their in-house ChatGPT expert, they are hoping to streamline healthcare processes and bring the joy back to being a doctor or healthcare professional.

John Brownstein, PhD is the Chief Innovation Officer of Boston Children’s Hospital. Prior to his role at the hospital, he was the director of the Computational Epidemiology Lab at Harvard Medical School. He has extensive experience developing data-driven solutions to improve public health.
