OpenAI CTO Mira Murati has led the company through a major transformation and today stands as the maker of state-of-the-art AI models. Recently, she spoke to the Associated Press about artificial general intelligence, its products such as ChatGPT, DALL-E and the newest GPT-4, and the importance of regulation for these systems.
OpenAI is a business with a bold vision to build artificial general intelligence (AGI) such that it is safe, reliable and aligned with human intentions. It strives to ensure it maximally benefits everyone while creating economic output and achieving human-level capability.
GPT-3 and GPT-4 – OpenAI’s powerful language models – are both aimed at achieving artificial general intelligence. GPT-3’s training set includes images, and OpenAI has made efforts to reduce form of bias through adjusting ratios of female and male images. OpenAI also uses reinforcement learning with human feedback to make sure model outcomes align with human preferences.
The OpenAI team acknowledges that technological systems like these can’t be designed and deployed safely in a vacuum. They must be monitored and analyzed for safety risks, based on real-world feedback.
In response to the recent letter calling for a 6-month industry pause on developing AI models that exceed the capabilities of GPT-4, Murati’s opinion is that it is important for organizations to take consider safety mechanisms and coordinate players in the space, and that it may not be practical to sign a letter to build safety mechanisms.
Since Murati joined OpenAI, the company has changed structurally in order to focus on its mission while being able to allocate the necessary funding. The safety standards and principles OpenAI abides evolve over time with more contact with reality, in order to identify weaknesses and breakage points with a low risk approach.
Mira Murata is OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer and overseer of their research, product, and safety teams. She is a key leader in the development and launch of OpenAI’s various AI models, and is an outspoken advocate for the safe use of these technologies and their potential benefits. OpenAI’s mission is to create advanced AI technologies in a way that positively impacts as many people as possible. Her passion and dedication to the high standards of OpenAI and the world of AI technology make her a benchmark for the industry.
