TNPCB and IIT- Madras to Implement AI Technology for Monitoring Landfill Fires and Lake Quality

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) is teaming up with IIT-Madras to bring cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology into play. The joint effort aims to enhance monitoring systems for landfill fires and improve the quality of lakes in the region.

In a recent announcement, the state’s environment and climate change minister, Siva V Meyyanathan, revealed plans for implementing an AI-based automatic water quality monitoring system in key lakes, including Chembarambakkam and Poondi. These lakes are crucial as they provide drinking water to Chennai residents. Similarly, systems will be set up in Ooty and Kodaikanal lakes as part of the initial phase.

Key points from the announcement include:

– Implementation of the Tamil Nadu Lake Monitoring Programme (TNLMP) in Poondi, Chembarambakkam, Ooty, and Kodaikanal lakes to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of water quality.
– Investment of Rs. 5 crore in collaboration with IIT-Madras for the lake monitoring project.
– Utilization of AI technology for monitoring landfills across Tamil Nadu to detect toxic gases and prevent fires.
– Allocation of Rs. 4 crore for the landfill monitoring project.

Additionally, the TNPCB will engage school and college students as volunteers in various environmental activities, promote sustainable practices through StartUp Tamil Nadu, and monitor noise pollution and air quality in key areas.

This initiative reflects a multi-faceted approach to environmental conservation, leveraging technology and community involvement for a greener, healthier future.
