Government to Release Draft AI Regulations by July

Date:

The Government of India is gearing up to introduce a draft regulatory framework for Artificial Intelligence (AI) by July 2024, according to Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Speaking at the Nasscom leadership summit in Mumbai, Chandrasekhar emphasized the importance of developing a regulatory framework to harness the economic potential of AI while addressing associated risks and harms. The government aims to release the draft AI regulation framework by June or July this year, with a focus on promoting AI for growth and ensuring safety and trust in its use.

Chandrasekhar highlighted the government’s commitment to cultivating AI-skilled individuals and implementing a global governance framework to manage AI risks. He also emphasized the need to establish principles and guidelines for addressing concerns related to bias and misuse in AI platforms during model training. Additionally, Chandrasekhar pointed out the increasing usage of the internet, noting that the current 900 million users are expected to reach 1.2 billion soon.

The government’s approach to regulating AI involves setting clear standards for platforms and addressing potential harms and criminal activities associated with the technology. Rather than regulating AI at specific stages of development, the focus is on establishing comprehensive guidelines to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI. With the forthcoming draft regulatory framework, India aims to create a conducive environment for leveraging AI for economic growth while safeguarding against potential risks and ensuring transparency and accountability in AI applications.
