South Africans Embrace AI with 91% Expecting Life to Look Different in 5 Years
Interest in artificial intelligence (AI) has seen a dramatic increase among South Africans, with a surge of 370% over the past year and a staggering 650% over the last five years. According to insights released by search engine giant Google, a remarkable 91% of South Africans believe that life with AI will look different in just five years.
Google’s report reveals that the most searched questions revolved around understanding AI and how to use it effectively. Searches related to the current status of AI and generative AI saw an astonishing increase of over 5,000%. These findings indicate a growing curiosity and desire to learn more about the potential of AI.
A survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Google provides further insight into the impact AI is already having on South Africans. The results indicate that AI is already influencing the way people access information (81%), learn (78%), and work (72%). Additionally, 60% of respondents express excitement about the possibilities offered by AI.
When asked about the areas where AI is likely to have a positive impact in the next five years, South Africans highlighted medical diagnoses accuracy and the effectiveness of the school curriculum (both at 73%). The majority (82%) also believed that AI would enhance their ability to comprehend complex subjects, while 79% felt it would improve their learning experience.
South Africans perceived AI as a technology that would benefit both society as a whole (76%) and individuals like themselves (69%). Encouragingly, 63% believed that South Africa would successfully harness the potential of AI in the coming five years.
One of the most significant findings in the survey is the consensus that AI will bring about substantial changes in jobs and industries over the next five years, with 95% of respondents in agreement. Furthermore, 83% predicted that AI would revolutionize the economy.
Matt Brittin, President of Google Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, expressed his enthusiasm for South Africans’ keen interest in AI, recognizing the transformative power of this technology. However, Brittin emphasized the importance of implementing AI responsibly and ensuring the proper regulation and oversight.
Regarding oversight, South Africans expressed confidence in technology companies (90%) and academic institutions (85%) rather than the government (50%) and armed forces (61%) to oversee AI’s development in the public’s best interests. Respondents favored a collaborative approach, with 91% advocating for government and technology companies to work together to educate students and workers about AI.
