OpenAI’s GPT Store has recently come under scrutiny for being flooded with virtual girlfriends, contradicting the platform’s usage policies. On January 10, OpenAI launched the GPT Store, allowing select users and partners to create, search for, and try out customized AI chatbots called ChatGPTs. However, the company explicitly stated that GPTs dedicated to fostering romantic companionship or engaging in regulated activities are not allowed. Moreover, creators were warned against building tools with sexually explicit or suggestive content, especially inappropriate for minors.
Despite these clear guidelines, it appears that the GPT Store has been inundated with virtual girlfriends. Both Quartz and Mashable reported numerous search results for terms like girlfriend and sweetheart in the store, although some hits had disappeared between the two reports. While the search bar within the GPT Store seems to have been removed, third-party sites still enable users to search for virtual romantic partners, with links leading to the actual GPT Store.
One such site, GPTStore.ai, allowed searches for terms like girlfriend and secret lover, showcasing various options. Although the search results lead to the author’s website instead of the official GPT Store, the availability of these AI companions is evident. OpenAI seems to be trying to address the situation by removing the search bar on their store page.
The GPT Store was initially announced in November 2021 during OpenAI’s DevDay conference, along with the introduction of their create-a-chatbot service. However, the store’s opening was delayed several times, potentially influenced by the CEO’s dismissal and subsequent reinstatement.
The emergence of AI companions raises concerns about individuals forming romantic attachments to artificial intelligence. Platforms like chatbot app Replika, described as an AI friend without judgment or social anxiety, have been downloaded over 10 million times, emphasizing the growing popularity of such AI-based relationships.
